This week in BDN Maine food: Sept. 29-Oct. 3, 2014

from the land-2

Saturday, October 4 is National Taco Day, so naturally the BDN’s features desk has been all over it this past week. Emily Burnham and I tasted tacos from Orono to Brewer to locate the best tacos in Greater Bangor. (Yes, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!) The verdict? Well, you’ll have to read the article to find out.

But if you are more the make-tacos-at-home type, then you’ll want to check out this week’s Maine Course column. I shared my foolproof, easy recipe for Homemade Taco Seasoning. It’s perfect for taco night at your house — and you probably have all the ingredients handy.

Heading out this weekend near Bangor? There’s a fab restaurant just across the river serving up a unique twist on traditional comfort foods that people are loving. Humble Comfort, the new eatery in South Brewer, caught the attention of BDN readers when features writer Emily Burnham wrote about it a few weeks ago. Well, I tried it this week, and the food is just as decadently wonderful as it sounded. I had a tender brisket sandwich with creamy cheese sauce served with hand-cut French fries — Yum. (Above are the barbecue chicken nachos that Emily sampled.)

Of course, if you are looking for some at-home comfort food, there’s a mouthwatering recipe for French Onion Soup on My Salty Kitchen that is just begging to be made this weekend. Did you see that cheese?

Wondering what to imbibe? If My Coaster Could Talk has the skinny on the Oktoberfest events happening in Bangor this weekend. And if you need a caffeine boost this weekend in Portland, why not visit the former Crema cafe, which has rebranded as Arabica, to match its sister coffee shop.
